We live in an age of constant communication. Messages, social media updates and notifications keep us connected throughout the day, yet being constantly in touch does not necessarily mean people feel emotionally connected. For many individuals, couples and families, conversations often revolve around work, schedules, responsibilities and everyday logistics, while asking someone how they are actually feeling — and creating the space to hear the answer — can be considerably harder.
According to Kareena Mehta, Founder of Kare Counselling, this emotional disconnect is increasingly visible in the experiences of individuals and relationships. “Many people appear fine on the outside but feel overwhelmed, anxious, lonely or emotionally exhausted on the inside,” says Mehta. People may continue meeting professional, personal and social responsibilities while struggling to pause and understand what they are experiencing emotionally.

In relationships, communication difficulties are not always a result of people caring less about each other. Often, individuals struggle to express what they need, listen without becoming defensive or make room for difficult emotions. Mehta observes that many conflicts that appear to be about everyday issues can have something deeper underneath them — the feeling of being unseen, unheard or misunderstood. The pressure to always appear okay can make this more difficult. Fear of judgement, burdening others or being considered “too emotional” can cause people to suppress what they feel, which may eventually surface as resentment, withdrawal or recurring conflict.
Meaningful communication is also often expected to happen naturally, particularly between people who are close. In reality, vulnerability can be difficult. Someone may want to tell their partner what they need but struggle to find the words. Parents may want to understand their children but not know what to ask, while friends who have known each other for years may still find conversations about loneliness, grief or emotional support uncomfortable. It was this gap that Mehta and her team repeatedly noticed through their work at Kare Counselling, eventually leading to Kare Collective, an initiative that uses therapist-informed conversation prompts, games and guided activities to make deeper conversations easier to initiate.
Structured prompts can help because they remove some of the pressure from the person starting a vulnerable conversation. Instead of one individual unexpectedly introducing a sensitive subject, the activity provides the question. The use of playfulness can also lower defensiveness and create a more relaxed environment. “When laughter, creativity and curiosity are included, meaningful conversations do not have to feel heavy,” explains Mehta. A seemingly simple question about a memory or experience can sometimes lead to discussions about values, relationships, emotional needs or experiences that people may not otherwise have explored together.
However, encouraging conversation does not mean forcing vulnerability. Emotional safety requires consent, boundaries and allowing people to share at their own pace. Such tools also cannot replace professional mental-health care when it is needed. Their role is more about creating a starting point and encouraging skills such as listening, empathy, emotional expression, appreciation and reflection.
For Mehta, mental health should not become a conversation only inside therapy rooms or during moments of crisis. Emotional well-being is also shaped by everyday interactions — how families respond when someone is struggling, how couples navigate disagreements, how friends listen and whether people feel comfortable expressing their needs. Making emotional conversations part of ordinary life may also encourage a more preventive approach to mental health, helping people recognise difficulties before they become overwhelming.
At a time when people can remain digitally connected throughout the day while still experiencing loneliness and emotional isolation, creating spaces where people feel safe enough to speak honestly is increasingly important. Kare Collective is one attempt to make those conversations easier to begin, but the larger idea is much simpler: emotional well-being can be encouraged through everyday acts of asking, listening and acknowledging what another person is experiencing. Sometimes, meaningful connection does not begin with having the right answer; it begins with being willing to have the conversation.
